How Laser Tattoo Removal Works

When tattoo pigment is injected into the dermis (the deeper layer of the skin), it becomes trapped behind a wall of collagen fibres—making it too large for the body’s immune system to remove naturally.

Our Q-switched Nd:YAG laser produces rapid pulses of high-energy light, which are selectively absorbed by the ink particles. This causes the pigment to break down into much smaller fragments, allowing the body to naturally flush them away. Because the surrounding skin is unaffected by the targeted laser energy, there’s minimal risk of damage or scarring.

Absolutely. Modern laser tattoo removal is far more effective than outdated or unreliable methods like removal creams or surgery. Creams can only fade surface layers and often leave behind patchy results. Surgical tattoo removal can be painful and carries a higher risk of scarring.

Laser treatment, on the other hand, is non-invasive, safe, and provides permanent removal over a series of sessions. Most clients see a dramatic reduction in tattoo visibility in as little as 6 treatments.

The first step is to consultation where we can discuss the desired outcome and perform patch test. Patch Test £40, redeemable against treatment when booked within 4 weeks.

Customers will see a reduction after the first treatment however to completely remove a tattoo depending on the ink colour and how deep it is in the skin, it could be between 2-15 treatments with intervals of 8 weeks between treatments. In some clients more sessions may be necessary for complete removal.

As we use a green light Nd:YAG laser we can treat a vast array of colours; black, red, brown, orange, blue and purple.

Difficult colours to remove are pastel colours such as; pale blue, turquoise  and pink.

Colours we cannot treat; white, yellow and UV ink.  Please note that we cannot treat GREEN, as we have a green light laser the ink wont absorb it. However, some older tattoos that are green can possibly be treated as they often were blue and yellow in mixed together (we can lighten the blue and the yellow would be  left in the skin).

We can treat 1-4 skin types with the ND YAG Q-switch technology. If you are in good health (no serious health concerns) and do not have hypo/hyper- pigmentation, tanned or Keloid scarring in your family or personal history. Generally clients with darker skin tone or multi-coloured tattoos will require more sessions.

Tattoo ink particles are too large for the body’s immune system to remove naturally because when tattoo pigment is injected into the lower layers of the skin (dermis) it becomes locked away by a wall of collagen fibres. Q-switched lasers produce very short bursts of high energy laser light. The light is absorbed by the large ink particles, generating heat that shatters the tattoo pigment into minute particles which the body is able to remove. Because the tattoo ink selectively absorbs the laser energy, the surrounding skin doesn’t overheat and there is no lasting damage.

The level of pain felt will depend on the type of tattoos, the amount of treatment required and your own pain threshold. Some clients would describe it as no more than uncomfortable, where others will describe it as an elastic band flicked against the skin. The truth is that you will only know how painful you find it until you try it! We can offer advice on pain relief, which will be given during your assessment.

Although there is a risk of scarring with any laser, in most cases, scarring is not a significant risk for tattoo removal with the ND Yag laser. Tattoo removal has become associated with scarring because the older generation of lasers used for tattoo removal were very aggressive and carried a very high risk of scarring. The ND Yag laser does not heat the surrounding skin significantly and the risk of scarring is much reduced. The risk of scarring is mainly associated with a genetic pre-disposition to forming scar tissue and the presence of resistant, green pigment. To reduce the risk, we carry out an extensive medical evaluation to identify high-risk clients.
